The idea: point your camera at a castle, a ruined abbey, a Georgian terrace or a market cross, and hear its story — narrated in character, in your language, on the spot. No plaques required.
What It Is
If The Past Could Talk is a heritage storytelling app built for anyone who has ever stood in front of an old building or a standing stone and wondered what it had seen. Point your camera at a historical site anywhere it's covered, and the app identifies it and narrates its history back to you — in character, in one of 12 languages.
Beyond single-site lookups, the app organises hundreds of heritage walking trails across Ireland — and now a growing number in London — so you can follow a themed route through a town or city centre, stop by stop, with a story at each one.
Who It's For
The app serves three overlapping audiences:
- Heritage tourists exploring Ireland and beyond, who want context on what they're looking at without hunting for a guidebook or a signal-dead information board.
- Irish Junior Cycle students, for whom the app doubles as a classroom and field-trip tool — including a Classroom Prep Mode that generates printable worksheets and trail booklets without needing to be physically on-site.
- Anyone curious about the stones, streets and ruins around them, whether at home or travelling.
How It Works
Under the hood, the app combines AI-powered site identification, a curated database of heritage facts sourced from official public records, and AI voice narration:
- Site identification: powered by Claude AI (Anthropic), which analyses your photo against known site details.
- Narration: generated in character and voiced using ElevenLabs text-to-speech, in any of 12 supported languages.
- Heritage data: drawn from public sector sources including the National Monuments Service, the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, Dublin City Council's Cultural Audit, and Northern Ireland's Historic Environment Record — all credited in full in the site footer.

Our Mission & Story
I'm a primary school teacher with over 20 years in the classroom. If The Past Could Talk grew out of two things I care about deeply: a lifelong love of local history, and a commitment to neuroinclusive learning shaped by neurodivergence in my own family.
Traditional text-heavy plaques and static guides often fail neurodivergent learners — and honestly, most modern audiences, who thrive on active, multisensory discovery. By pairing local history with conversational, first-person AI storytelling, in English and Irish, If The Past Could Talk turns physical heritage trails into interactive, accessible, place-based learning experiences. I built it to help schools, families and communities experience history not as a set of memorised dates, but as a living conversation, open to every mind.
