Grace O'Malley's stronghold guards the harbour at the mouth of Clew Bay on Clare Island — reachable only by ferry from Roonagh Pier near Louisburgh, since no bridge or causeway connects the island to the mainland. This trail covers the 16th-century tower house traditionally linked to the pirate queen, the Cistercian abbey where she is said by tradition (not documented proof) to be buried, one of the earliest lighthouses built on the Irish coast, a ruined Napoleonic-era signal tower on the island's highest summit, the Famine-era population collapse recorded in the island's still-visible lazy beds, the pioneering 1909–1911 Clare Island Survey, and one of the island's roughly ten Iron Age promontory forts. Because the only approach is a sea crossing of about 5km, this trail's centre point sits roughly midway between the Roonagh ferry slip and the island's landmark cluster, with a wide trigger radius to allow for GPS drift over open water.
