Belmullet was raised almost from scratch in the 1820s by William Henry Carter on a narrow isthmus between Blacksod Bay and Broadhaven Bay, its market square, hotel, church and harbour built within a single generation. This short walk traces Carter's planned town from its central square to the ancient canal cut that gave the settlement its reason for existing, and on to the harbour that carried its trade and the workhouse that bore witness to the Great Famine.
